To have a Debit or Credit Card in Paris you have to have an address in France. I'd recommend you to check the rates your bank gives you for intl. purchases and exchange rate or just use cash during your trip.
You will be fine with cash for most things, unless you wish to purchase skip the line access tickets for the monuments online, you don't really need a debit card.
Please be careful though and only carry the cash you need for the day and not much more.

Why would you want to do that? Plus I found a lot of places were cash only.

I would recommend you buy Euros from your bank at home before you go to avoid ATM fees, but if you must get cash in Paris, bank ATMs often offer the best rates.

My niece is traveling there from the Middle East with kids but no husband & is nervous to have too much cash on hand, was looking for an alternate option so she'd feel safer. Thank you for your help.

Very understandable. Tell her BEWARE OF PICK POCKETS!! She will be reminded frequently while she is there but that was one of the major differences between Paris in particular and the Middle east.

I never had a problem with having things snatched but I believe women with children distracting them from their surroundings in crowded places were a big target. My friend had her phone snatch just as she was exiting a train once... and I have been told plenty of other tales of such misfortune.
