Why locals love it

Maison Dufort is one of the historic buildings recently restored by the Foundation for Knowledge and Freedom (FOKAL), the Prince Claus Fund (PCF), the Institute for the Safeguarding of National Heritage (ISPAN) and the Walloon Heritage Institute (IPW).

Why you should visit it

Maison Dufort is a beautiful example of a gingerbread house, an architectural style that originated in Haiti in the late 19th century, primarily through the work of three young Paris-educated Haitian architects: Georges Baussan, Léon Mathon, and Joseph-Eugène Maximilien. There are few original gingerbread houses left in Haiti today.

Special tip

You can sometimes book a tour through FOKAL, which has occasional public events focused on the gingerbread houses.
