Hundreds of homes painted pink, blue, yellow, green, teal, and purple appear as a painting from afar. This project is perennially controversial as the homes of this impoverished zone were simply painted but not earthquake-retrofitted after the 2010 quake. Despite this, residents have mixed feelings and many are proud of the new look.

Thomazeau Natural Springs

A natural spring fills this outdoor pool on the western end of Thomazeau. On any given day you might find children swimming, women and girls doing laundry, and a gaggle of young men sitting around the concrete picnic benches drinking beer and playing checkers. The pool itself has a concrete outer rim with moss-covered steps down on two sides.

Fort Jacques is one of the places I always take guests to visit. While most of the "history" you hear from guides is just legend, the fort itself is still worth the trip. It is actually a revolutionary war era building, but no, the mortar between the stones was not made with the blood of disobedient soldiers.

Overlook at Mt. Boutilliers

In previous years, this outlook was a sketchy crop of concrete on the top of Mount Boutillier, just passed the TV and radio towers. Though a restaurant and bar takes up most of the space now, it’s still a good spot to get a view of the city.
