What to buy? If this is the question, Ecuador is a country whose handicrafts are as diverse as its geographical regions.

Since Pre-Columbian times, Ecuadorians have been very skilled people, producing astonishing masterpieces of clay and gold that nowadays are on display in several archaeological museums.

The best option for discovering this variety is to visit the Handicrafts' Market in La Mariscal district. There you will find all sort of items from tapestries made in manual looms by the Kichwa speaking Otavalo or Salasaca Indians; women's blouses embroidered with different disigns; T-shirts with Ecuadorian motifs; the UNESCO's World Heritage Panama Hats that come from Montecristi on the Coast and from Cuenca in Southern Ecuador; handmade necklaces made by the Saraguro Indian women; woodcarvings from San Antonio de Ibarra or paintings. The limit is your imagination.

Other place is El Ejido Park where every weekend there is a permanent fair of craftsmen and artists.

For Ecuadorian products such as chocolate, coffee, spices, designer's outfits, books, among other stuff, Galería Ecuador is a good place. You have one gallery in La Mariscal district in front of Gabriela Mistral Park and down the Metropolitan Cathedral in the Historical district.

In La Ronda Street there are several art galleries, chocolate shops (check Chez-Tiff) and handicrafts shops.
