El Sagrario is one of the most popular churches of the Historical District of Quito. There are frequent holy masses and in this church archives are the oldest baptism certificates of the city since 1535. Couples rent int church for weddings and baptisms.

Why you should visit it

The stone façade is a masterpiece of stonecarving and in its interior you can admire the impressive and breathtaking gilded woodcarved screen made by the famous local artist Bernardo de Legarda in the mid 1700s. The frescoes were painted by the local artist Francisco Albán in the same epoch.

Special tip

It is not allowed to light real candles inside the churches due to regulations of the Metropolitan Institute of Cultural Heritage.
