The museum is hosted in the traditional Colonial district of San Marcos, a place which still conserves the familiar ambiance. It is very quiet and the museum boasts a very nice collection of three characters considered as symbols of Ecuadorian identity: Simón Bolívar, Manuela Sáenz and Antonio José de Sucre.

Manuela Sáenz (1797-1856) was designated by President Rafael Correa as "General of Honor of the Republic of Ecuador" in 2007 due to her active participation in the Independence (1820s). She was Bolívar's lover and best ally, while Sucre was the leader of the Battle of Pichincha (1822). Weapons, pictures, coins and original letters are on display.
