Santa Catalina is one of the oldest convents of Quito founded in 1613. Its history is envolved in legends and mysteries of several characters that lived here such as the legendary Manuela Sáenz, designated by the government as General of Honor due to her active participation in the Independence. The monastery was closed for more than 400 years.
The complex is a misture of architectural styles from 17th century Baroque to the Neo-Classical added in 1870 by Juan Pablo Sanz. The museum has on display an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures dating back Colonial period as well as a recreation of the cellars of the noons.
The remains of the president García Moreno, assassinated in 1875 were hidden in one of the walls of the monastery. Discover this chilling story!
