Why locals love it

The church is one of the most striking buildings you'll find in Reykjavik. It's the tallest church of Iceland, roaring at 74.5 meters. It's one of the best known landmarks in the city and one of the few expressionist architecture you will see in your journey.

Why you should visit it

It is positioned dead-center and doesn't require much effort really. It's a beautiful building and one of the most grand architectures in Iceland. Probably the most photographed building in Iceland.

Special tip

Visit the church tower as it offers an extraordinary view of the city. It costs, but not much (600 isk for adults, 100 isk for kids)

The tower has a great view of Reykjavik, something you don't want to miss... BUT... the best spot is not the tower but the second story view of the church. On the second floor you get a breathtaking inside view of the church, a scale model of the church, the huge organ pipes and the church's best kept secret, a close up view of the beautiful window that you see above the main entrance from the outside. That window is a piece of art that's best enjoyed from the inside with a natural backlight.

As an athiest, I find the churches in Iceland really relaxing and neutralizing. Do not hesitate visiting churches in Iceland, whether it's in Reykjavík or outside the capital area.

Beautiful, worn paying the extra to go up the tower too. Spectacular views on a clear day
