Living in Riga wirh kids

Hi! We are thinking about moving from switzerland to riga. Nature, playgrounds, cycling and the typical fairtrade-organic way of life is important for us. What can you tell me about Riga with family in this case? Thank you!!!

There are a lot of local organic food stores, for example:

http://idille.lv
https://www.borninlatvia.lv

Many have websites where you can order online.

As regards cycling, I'm cycling to work all year round. Cycling culture is not very high, because there is lack of infrastructure, people cycle on pavements because they don't feel safe on streets together with cars. That causes tension between pedestrians, cyclers and drivers. With kids you should definitely cycle on pavement (in case there is no special cycling path).

Some useful info about culture events you can find from Goethe Institut: https://www.goethe.de/ins/lv/de/index.html

There are a lot of parks in Riga centre, they all have good children playgrounds. My friend is working for Lappset office in Latvia, they are Finnish playground producers and have contract with Riga municipality.

Hi, Riga is a safe and compact city. Easy to get around by foot, bike or even car - if you plan carefully. Plus there are all kinds of (very affordable) activities for kids: sports, arts, choir, dance, etc.
Baby sitting services are cheap too - so Mum & Dad can enjoy some of our fine restaurants.
Raising kids here is a super choice; i pleased i choose to raise my 3 here.

well it depands on where you want to live. If you are interested to live in the centre of Riga then cycling with children around centre could be quite extreme. We don't have many cycle paths. I could recommend you to coose Jūrmala because it's located near sea, nature is beautiful.

The best choise could be Sigulda but Sigulda is about 40km far from Riga. Sigulda is very nice city. It has beautihul nature and market.

My husband comes from Sigulda. If we had more money we would choose to live there. If you have questions about education i can advise schools or preschools.

Than situation is not so bad :D Riga is calm and small town actually. Therefore I like it. For people in my age some times its hard to find job because of lack of russian language. More than half of inhabitants are russian speakers no matter ukrainian, russian, polish. Luckily don`t have problems with russian and english.
