Dear Neil,
thanks for your message.
a) on a one day tour you should definitely go to Old town and go around in Klusais (quiet) center to look at Art Noveau style buildings.
b) visit Central Market, it is soviet time market with smells and cheap prices.
c) there are plenty of very good restaurants in the center, I would suggest Old Riga. You can look at www.barradar.lv, it is in Latvian, but you can find the best restaurant by photos :)
Enjoy! :)

Thank you. I have art nouveau buildings on my list. Might be tricky to get to Klusais, but I have noted. I will definitely visit the Central Market though! I am staying just 10 mins walk away, but it hadn't before shown up on my radar. Now working my way through the restaurant list . . . . .
Thanks again.

a) Take the elevator to St.Peter's church steeple for magnificent Old Riga panorama; stroll along the channel and parks - start at the Opera, find the bronze statue of former Riga mayor George Armitstead with his wife and dog (unveiled by the Queen Elizabeth II) and head in the direction of Freedom Monument; visit Art Nouveau at Alberta street and if interested - visit State Museum of Art and Janis Rozentals exhibition (till October 30, 2016)
b) Saturday crafts market at Kalnciema str. + wooden architecture and 'Art needs space'
c) Lido Vērmanītis (Tērbatas/Elizabetes) for a quick meal, although Latvians have learned to improve the so called 'Latvian dinner' and I would suggest Index Cafe or Lidojošā Varde (both Antonijas str.).

Thanks. I will try to do all this, especially your art suggestions. Not sue about your food suggestions, but might try Lido. Thanks again.

We had a lunch in a LIDO restaurant which was fine. Vermanitis staff were rather unpleasant to me, so we didn't eat there. We managed all your sightseeing suggestions though; thanks very much.

a) A lot of places are already described here. For taking pictures, I would recommend: 1) AB dambis across the Akmens bridge https://likealocalguide.com/riga/peldosa-galerija-noass 2) Roof terrace of Galleria Riga shopping centre https://likealocalguide.com/riga/terrace-riga

b) Miera street district, including Rocket Bean Roastery and Labietis Brewery.

c) I would recommend Valtera restorāns - a contemporary Latvian cuisine based only on Latvian rural products: http://www.valterarestorans.lv/en/

see the Old Town, have lunch or dinner at Petergailis restaurant (address: Skarnu iela 25, Rīga, LV-1050). Kalnciema Kvartals is a good place to visit on Thursday night (live music) or on Saturday (open air market).

I meant to say that we also went to Maja one evening in Kalnciema. I'm not sure whether I got the suggestion from you, but it was a tremendous restaurant and we all enjoyed it very much. Thanks for taking the time to give me advice. I liked Riga very much by the way.
