We decided to book the art nouveau tour as we know that really to appreciate art, you need to know something more than just that it is pretty. Artus was our guide. It was all we had wished for and more. We walked to many examples of the AN architecture, more than just the one street that is most famous for it. Besides being incredibly informative about AN, Artus also showed us examples of other types of architecture specific to Riga and we talked about the history of Riga as presented by the architecture. Artus is particularly passionate about all things Riga. As we walked along, we talked about schools, employment, geography, economics, etc. It was a wonderful way to get to know life in Riga beyond the tourist stop. We finished our visit with a visit to the central market and an urban picnic. It was just my husband and I and Artus. Well worth the time and cost. GREAT experience!

Description

Most tour guides stick to a very small area often known as the ‘Art Nouveau District’ but we feel this does not do Riga’s history justice, there is so much more out there. We aim not only to cover the well known touristic streets such as Alberta and Elizabetes iela but to take you further into central Riga to explore some of the more obscure examples Riga has to offer.

Now it is your turn to see why Riga is world famous for its incredible Art Nouveau architecture. Put the medieval churches and Old Town to one side and have a look at what was happening at the beginning of the 20th century. Riga was at its peak, rich merchants were showing off their power and wealth and the city was expanding at an alarming rate. The result was a phenomenal building boom that coincided with a growth of the Art Nouveau style across the world.

The Art Nouveau Museum is a great addition to this tour, if you plan to visit it please let us know so we can better include this into your tour. Its a great way to finish off a nice walk with us. So join us and see what made Riga so special during this period. With over 600 buildings constructed in this style between 1900 and 1910, we have a lot to show you.

We booked a guided tour of the Art Nouveau district with knowledgeable guide James who told us all there is to know about the district, and while walking about we also got an insight into life in Latvia. James was very receptive to our demands, and also showed us to some true gems for vintage lovers like us! I highly recommend E.A.T. Riga Tours to anyone visiting Riga. You will not get a better and more personal guiding experience!
This Art Nouveau tour is a must-do for any Art Nouveau / architecture lover.
We did this walk on our first day in Riga and so it gave us the perfect opportunity to discover and understand how this style developed and shaped the city and what was the historical, social and cultural context at the time. This walk was informative and extremely pleasant as our guide alternatively used technical, historical and cultural explanations as well as funny anecdotes flavoured with a pinch of British humour. He also provided us with many useful tips on other complementary / "off track" places to explore .. but also where to eat !
