Explore Stunning Crater Lakes in the Roman Countryside!

Two astonishing lakes lie deep in the green hills of Castelli Romani, legacies of the huge dormant Laziale Volcano, unfortunately unknown to most people. The lakes are home to many natural and historical beauties, including Roman Empire remains and much more.

Description

Our first stop will be the enchanting village of Nemi with its wonderful view of the lake, which is actually the crater of an ancient volcano. You can choose to either have a walk in the village overlooking the lake or visit the Museum of Roman Ships. The museum contains Emperor Caligula's vessels found in the lake and the ruins of goddess Diana's temple.

Afterwards, we’ll head back to the village. If you’re lucky, you’ll have the chance to taste the traditional strawberries of Nemi. At this point we can also have lunch in a restaurant high above the lake.

Following lunch, we’ll make our way to Castel Galdolfo, where you can admire the breathtaking view of Lake Albano, which is much bigger than Nemi. We’ll take a nice walk by the lake and I’ll share some local stories and legends (about ghosts, suicides and so on). Fun fact: the Pope’s summer residence is located on a hill overlooking the lake.

If you’re still hungry, you can enjoy some traditional porchetta and Italian gelato.
