During the WWII Rovaniemi was totally destroyed by the bombings and lastly by the German troops who retreated from the city to Norway, burning villages along the way they went. The Old bridge was demolished by the Germans and surrounding areas were mined in 1944. The mine clearance was really hard work and still some old mines were found in 1970's.
