In the Continuation War, Rovaniemi acted as a German garrison city. There was not a military building that could be adapted to there usage so the headquarters of German and Finns was in a nursery school. As a result, the Germans started to build large-scale construction work and built up houses to cover their needs during the war, 1941-1944.
For example, is this sports field named after Erwin Rommel, Rommel's sport field was built by German soldiers. The Germans also rammed Ounasvaara's first run-off in 1943.
