San Diego is a very active city and Cowles Mountain Summit at Mission Trails Regional Park is one of the best hikes in the city. Still largely undiscovered by many San Diegans, you'll never have to battle other hikers for room on the trails. The 1.5 mile hike to the top leads to breathtaking 360 degree views of the city.
Why you should visit it
While the beaches are great for delving in to San Diego's active lifestyle, nothing can beat the view from the top of Cowles Mountain. The hike is short enough to be great for all fitness levels and you're sure to meet lots of friendly locals (both of the human and canine variety) along the way.
Special tip
Brave the early morning wake up call to get to the top in time for sunrise. The view will take your breath away.
