SF is not a "cultural city" like New York or Washington, however the De Young is really a great museum, with interesting exhibitions and permanent collections, that you can combine with a walk in the botanical gardens in Golden Gate Park. It's worth a visit.
You do not need to purchase a ticket to enter the building, and to see the breathtaking views from the Observation Level of the Hamon Tower.
