ACME. While long in history, Boudin is a tourist magnet, to the tune of the Hard Rock Cafe and their bread is "just ok".

Hi Rachel, I would definitely go to Tartine Bakery in the Mission (their bread is to die for!) or Josey Baker in Alamo Square. Boudin is great too, but I'd start their first!

Boudin has the original sourdough bread with their sourdough starter dating back to the gold rush days.

Yup, I would say Boudin as well. I suggest going to go to this location Boudin Bakery & Cafe at 160 Jefferson St, San Francisco, CA 94133 so you can see them making it as well.

For sandwich rolls check out Lucca deli in the Marina on Chestnut st. For larger loafs check out Tartine Bakery in the Mission District.

boudin is the place most tourists go. My favorite local bakeries are Tartine and Acme (in the Ferry Building).

I usually go to Boudin, which has several locations throughout the City. It is a bakery/company founded in San Francisco in 1849, so they know what sourdough is all about. Boudin makes a uniquely-San Franciscan type sourdough, not a French baguette-style sourdough. In fact, I just bought a sourdough loaf yesterday at the bakery on 10th Ave. and Geary.
