GRU to Sao Paulo Transportation

(12 answers)
By Evan Traveller October 15, 2020

I will be visiting Sao Paulo for one day between flights. I am flying into and out of Guarulhos, but would like to see a little of Sao Paulo, even to walk around. What is a good way to get to the city? I understand there is a bus and a metro, but I worry about crowded places with Coronavirus.

Do you have a recommended neighborhood to stay for just one night? Please let me know!

EDIT: I will be landing at 06:00 on a Thursday morning and leaving at 15:00 on Friday. I will come back to Sao Paulo with a friend for more time two weeks later. I am just looking for a good spot while I have a short time by myself. Thank you all for your answers so far!

As it is just one day, take Uber and stay near Paulista Avenue. You will pay a bit more but it is good value for money. Cheers.

São Paulo will be crowded, unfortunatelly. Guarulhos is about 40 minutes (by car) from the city. If you can afford to, I suggest you to get an Uber. Abother good option is the airport bus.
About the place to stay, will also depend on your budget. Good locations are: Ana Rosa, Vila Mariana, República, cuz you'll be close to the main tourism points (old and new downtown, historical places, restaurants & services)

Hi Evan, I agree with the people that said you should use Uber (since you dont have much time and all public transportation could be crowded).

Regarding location I suggest staying at Pinheiros neighborhood. It is safe, sort of central depending on where you're going to and there are many attractions, restaurants and bars.

Uber, for sure!! And then choose a place close to Paulista Avenue (Paraíso, Ana Rosa, Consolação, Higienópolis, Brigadeiro)... you’ll have direct access to the green/yellow/blue/red subway lines (the main 4) that’ll take you to all the main tourist spots in the city. Good luck and enjoy!!!

Guarulhos internacional Airport is 1 hour away (traffic can increase that) from the city centre, and most of it's famous neighbourhoods like Vila Madalena, Jardins... As you have very little time, I would take an uber. It's cheaper than regular cabs, safe and fast.

Evan, Guarulhos is 30km away from Sao Paulo. The Subway is brand new and good, not crowded. You can use it until you get to Avenida Paulista, which is part of the business financial district. from there you can walk or catch a cab/uber to Jardins (Rua Ocar freire, Rua Haddock Lobo for example) and later go to Ibirapuera Park (best place to see/walk/ exercise or to Vila Madalena by night (young and hip place)

Agree with the previous recommendations ;) bus service, Uber or taxi.

Paulista is a nice option, but pinheiros would be a great location as well! Plenty of bars, restaurants and local stores.

Enjoy your stay!

Hi Evan.

How long time will you get to walk around? GRU airport is far from the city. It's a trip of almost 1 hour and a half.

The first step is taking a cab from GRU to Vila Madalena neighborhood. Tell to the taxi driver to leave you near the Beco do Batman. It's a colorful place surrounded by grafitti pieces, bars and restaurants.

There's a subway station on Fradique Coutinho street. Take the line yellow up to Paulista avenue. Everything will depend on how long free time you will get.

Best,
Paulo

Stay at any hotel near Avenida Paulista where you will find lots of things to do and plenty of public transportation to take you anywhere in the city.

Hello Evan,

It is possible to go by train nowadays, however it is a bit complicated and far. therefore I recommend taking the bus. Airport bus service : you can see the timetable here: https://www.gru.com.br/en/passenger/to-from-gru-airport/bus .

First you must chose a place to stay so you can take the bus to the right district - there are many options. If you have just one day I would say Paulista is the best option. If you enjoy the nightlife you could go to Vila Madalena or Vila Olimpia.

Have a nice stay and enjoy!

Best Regards

The safer and easier way is to get a taxi or an uber. Probably uber will be cheaper, but if you’re driving on the rush hours* the taxis can use the buses lanes, which are usually faster!

Rush hours:
From SP to GRU - after 4pm
From GRU to SP - in the morning

Hi Evan!
You can take the airport bus service from Guarulhos to a few places in the city, and it's really empty (like, really. I've used this bus more than 20 times and I always have a row just to myself).

About neighborhood, I'd recomend for you to stay near Paulista avenue. They have a lot of options in where to stay, places to eat, cultural activities etc.
Vila Madalena is also a good place, but if you only have one night Paulista would be the best choice.
