If you're up to try book cafes, there are a few along the stretch of Bukit Pasoh Road such as The Reading Room (http://thereadingroom.com.sg/) and the Open Book Cafe (https://www.facebook.com/openbookcafesg). Open Book Cafe is bilingual in English and Mandarin though.

Hey! The Library@Orchard is pretty nice. There is also Library@Esplanade which I haven't been, you can look it up. Galleries...depending on what sort you are looking for. The Singapore Night Festival 24-26 Aug 2017 has really aesthetic art. How about the National Museum of Singapore? It is also near a local university, Singapore Management University - nice campus to explore. Bookstores...not too sure but you can try Kinokuniya which has a huge selection.

Nice museums are ACM (Asian Civilisation Museum) & the Peranakan Museum. They also offer free guided tours by Friends of the Museum volunteers.
For independent galleries, try Gillman Baracks
