The monument called the Reindeer statue, official name is Reindeer and Herder, is the icon of Sodankylä. It was erected in 1970 to tell of "the enormous work that a man from Lapland and manure has done in the fells and outland for the benefit of his home and homeland in the barren, special province of Lapland."
Reindeer herding still provides a livelihood for many families in the village of Sodankylä and is very important for its practitioner, as it keeps the connection to the natural cycle alive. There are up to 20,000 reindeer in Sodankylä - doubling more than humans.
