The architecture of the bus station is a factor that greatly enriches the urban image in Sodankylä. The building from 1962 was designed by architects Kaarlo Leppänen, Niilo Pulkka and Pekka Rajala, as was Rovaniemi.
After the Second World War, it was considered important to extend bus station services to war-torn northern Finland. The first solution in the central centers of Lapland, Kemi, Rovaniemi and Sodankylä were the barracks stations first opened in 1946 and the temporary bus stations in 1949.
