It certainly pays to have a guided tour of the Hermitage as it is easy to get lost in all the rooms. The guide was also very knowledgeable and we got to skip the long lines. There was only 3 of us in the tour group which was just as well as it can be hard to stick together in all the crowds. With such a small group we could also ask to be shown to the artworks that interested us.

Description

The State Hermitage Museum ranks with the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art as one of the most important and richest art galleries in the world.

Starting with 225 paintings purchased in 1764 by Catherine the Great, its collection now comprises more than 3 million objects and works of art.

Raphael's ‘Madonna’, da Vinci’s ‘Madonna’, Titian's 'St Sebastian', Rembrandt's ‘Return of the Prodigal Son', and James Cox’s golden ‘Peacock Clock’ are just a few of the Hermitage’s superb works of Western-European art.

Treasures and artefacts from almost every culture known to man are housed in the Hermitage, including a unique collection of Greek jewellery from the Black Sea region, Scythian gold, Ancient Egyptian sculptures, Iranian silverware, Chinese manuscripts, Russian icons, and Byzantine applied art.

Your guide will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the Hermitage during your 3-hour visit. Afterwards, you can remain in the museum and continue exploring at your leisure.

Please be aware that the admission time may be adjusted according to the Museum’s early admission policy.

The Impressionists collection is not included.

Great introduction to the most fabulous museum in the world
This is the best way to find your way around the Hermitage, and learn from a knowledgeable guide at the same time. The whole morning seems too short. There’s not a moment to get bored or tired
