Fabulous halls full of untold riches! That's what the Hermitage is, in short.
We’ll start with a suite of monumental state rooms of the Winter Palace, which were meant for emphasizing power, wealth and authority of Russian Emperors and to glorify the Empire and praise its military and cultural achievements. The level of grandeur here is what you would expect of a huge country which occupied 15% of the world landmass and had 10% of the global population and was also an absolute monarchy.
Then we'll enter more intimate rooms, where initially only servants and trusted courtiers were allowed. There you’ll see wondrous curiosities from all over the world - like 17th century clock mechanism with real-size moving figures of birds. Many other exquisite decorations can be found there, as well as the most treasured paintings collection of Renaissance Italian artists.
Finally, we’ll come into the New Hermitage – the building which was conceived as a museum from the start. Still a part of the palace complex, its ornate halls keep masterpieces by Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Flemish old masters.
