I used to be a lifesaver at Bronte and it's a fantastic family beach but it can be dangerous. As can Tamaramma next door but Coogee and Clovelly are great. Bondi is a national icon and it is beautiful but can be very crowded in summer.
For something a bit different there is Red Leaf Beach on the harbour which has a boardwalk out around it in to the water with some pontoons in the middle. It can be a bit tricky to find though.
All the other options mentioned in the previous answer are great too.
We also have some beautiful clothing optional beaches on the harbour if you are so inclined.

Bondi is definately special. Eastern suburbs has many which are close to Sydney centre. Otherwise our Central Coast has a place called Avoca Beach which is also great. Let me know if you are interested in travel guide to any.

It depends on your preference. If you like waves, go to the coastal beaches: Bondi is a long stretch of beach, and there are a few beach bars nearby. Bronte has a park and bbq area. Coogee, I personally love because there's a park area so you can get a bit of shade and you're allowed to drink. There's also Manly (which is similar to Bondi, beach-wise) and Shelly Beach if you want to do a bit of snorkelling.

If you don't like waves go to the harbour beaches in Watsons Bay and Vaucluse; Double Bay if you want to do laps. Balmoral beach is my favourite harbour beach, it also has a big park area and it's just pretty.

I would recommend trying them all (you can walk from Bondi to Coogee, then on another day do Rushcutters to Watsons Bay, etc). Each beach has its own personality and you just have to find out which one resonates with you best.

PS I'm so jealous I'm not spending the summer in Sydney... Enjoy the beaches and I hope you have an amazing time! :)

Bondi is the most famous. It's huge, and you can swim, surf, walk, jog - and nearby eat, drink and shop. It's urban - very cool. But there are dozens of others and they're all great. Some names: Tamarama, Bronte, Coogee. If you want to head away from the CBD go to Mona Vale, Avalon, or Palm Beach. If you don't want waves try Neilsen Park or Balmoral.
