Why locals love it

It's a kitsch monstrosity! The architect incorporated elements of Gothic, Italian and Art Deco design, resulting in a bizarre confection of gratuitous splendour, with velvet swirls and camp chandeliers. The Koh-I-Nor cut crystal chandelier is the 2nd largest on earth, weighing over 4 tonnes. No doubt it would taste spectacular dipped in chocolate.

Why you should visit it

They offer something for everyone, like a mixed bag of sweets. In any given week you could see a tart comedian, suck on a cinematic masterpiece, feast on aural treats belted out by a soul queen, marvel at sharp chords plucked by guitar legends, delight in the crunchy pleasures of rock opera, get in touch with the dead or even see Dr Who live.

Special tip

The Sydney Film Festival runs for two weeks in early June. The State hosts plenty of the films on offer.
