Why locals love it
It was started by the Beer Baron - a charming rapscallion who saw loopholes in the city's alcohol laws and started a home delivery service. Those pesky lawmakers stopped him quicksmart, but the Baron got his 2nd wind and opened this place. It's above board, but with the intoxicating whiff of a speakeasy. That dubious pedigree is part of the appeal.
Why you should visit it
Redfern has plenty of bars, but this place is on the medal podium. Why? Drinks are cheap. Food is too. And thanks to the bar staff, it's laid-back even when the crowd isn't - dancing like loons until midnight. The staff really do make this place feel like home. So do their playlists - featuring everything you like, from Tom Waits to Run DMC.
