The song's been covered by dozens of artists - a true-blues classic. It's about a train whose light is seen as salvation by prisoners watching it pass by night after night, out of reach. This bar lets local prisoners hop on board, covering them in fairy lights and setting them free - a twinkling reprieve from the 9-5 cellblocks where they do time.
Why you should visit it
The Midnight Special will shine a light on you. Just metaphorically. It's pretty dark inside: black walls, deep southern blues or tough rock 'n' roll humming from the speakers, with plenty of whiskey, bourbon and rum on the menu. Still, you can't help feeling a weight's been lifted when you enter this den of warm smiles and surprise musical guests.
Special tip
Get in early on a Friday and Saturday. This place fills up fast.
