The library, the biggest in the Baltic states, was completed in 1993 and it's been a crucial part of the Tallinn cityscape ever since. It's imposing, almost cyclopean appearance inspires awe, creating the strong impression of a Fortress of Knowledge.
Many a visitor has mistaken this place for a giant mosque. In front of the building you will find a small square covered in bright flower arrangements that in 2007 became the epicentre of the riots spurred by the removal of a controversial Soviet war memorial, the so-called “Bronze Soldier”.
