Estonian Open Air Museum

Why locals love it

The idea behind this open air museum is fairly simple. They went around the land picking up old homesteads and dumping them here. We're assuming they asked permission first. But the idea of such a museum is a solid one.

Why you should visit it

Go far enough West and the gigantic shopping centres and flashy suburban homes give way to village scenes from “Asterix”. Much of Estonia's history is linked to the rural way of life. A large portion of the population used to live in farms and homesteads until the Soviet annexation of the country in 1939. Get educated about it all here.

Special tip

Tickets €3/€6 are available at the entrance. To get there take bus 21 and 21b from Balti Jaam to Vabaõhumuuseum!

I absolutely loved the Estonian Open Air Museum. First of all it is outside in the beautiful woods. I visited in autumn and the falling leaves and Estonian houses were absolutely lovely. I enjoyed finding out how people lived from different parts of the country. I especially loved the sheep that were by the islands houses. Ask what time the houses close to get the most of your visit. I would go again in a heartbeat because the area is so open and it feels like a combination hike/museum visit. How often do you get that?

Great place to escape the city, relax and have a picnic. Besides the nature you can find out how old Estonians used to live.
