Pirita Beach

Why locals love it

Pirita beach is the most popular one in Tallinn, so you shouldn't expect a lot of privacy. Still, the water is safe, not too freezing and pleasantly uninfested by sharks or any other dangerous creatures. Volleyball is quite popular here so if you're seeking to have a more active vacation, keep an eye out for an open spot by the nets.

Why you should visit it

If navigating a crowded beach and lying in the sun tickle your fancy then that's the place. You can also head to the beach club for a drink and some shade. For romance, sunset walks are highly recommended but be aware that the furthest areas of the beach are for nudists. So don't be surprised if a naked guy runs by and ruins your date.

Special tip

To get there take the bus no 1A, 8, 34A or 38 from Viru Center to the "Pirita" stop.

I don't really like it for swimming on a hot summer day, because I prefer smaller and less crowded beaches outside Tallinn, but Pirita beach is a really great to walk in the evenings or off season and look at the sunset.

Pirita also has a surf club for people who are looking for something more active. They rent out equipment for windsurf and kitesurf, and also paddle/SUP boards. Every evening at 8PM they have organised trips on SUP boards so you can enjoy the smooth summer air and watch the sunset. Unfortunately you cannot surf on the waves in Estonia since we are not by the ocean and the waves are too tiny. However, Pirita is lucky as they have get exactly 8 larger waves from a ferry that comes from Finland 5 times a day. The surf club knows at what time the ferry is going, so you will see people grabbing the paddle boards, going out, waiting for the waves to come so they could surf back to the beach. It's ridiculous and fun to watch.
