Why locals love it

The novelty of Soviet retro design still runs strong in Tallinn. Tops is another bar that plays on nostalgia. We must admit that it still works. We appreciate the Soviet-standard tea glasses. The food's pretty basic, but there's a certain warmness to seeing your jumbo ham-and-pickles panini hastily assembled in front of your eyes.

Why you should visit it

Being out of the way certainly helps, as Tops is situated in Kalamaja, a twenty minute walk from the Old Town. With its traditional 20s and 30s wooden houses, the setting couldn't be more perfect for this new cool-kids hangout. Because tourists rarely stray far from the medieval city centre, the cafe's good for people-spotting.

Special tip

The music comes from old vinyls and you can choose which one you want to listen to.
