I thoroughly enjoyed this tour of Tallinn - it was heartfelt, fascinating and adventurous. Even though my roots are Estonian, there is always something new and beautiful to discover in Tallinn... and Waypoint and our tour guide Jaak offered us such undiscovered gems in plenty. We began our "Seaside Adventure" tour cycling through the Kalamaja seaside - think breathtaking concrete structures, previously home to factories and prisons, and now reclaimed by museums, concert halls and the best parties in town. We visited an old Soviet factory in the Noblessner factory complex where you could spot some propaganda flyers here and there (historically fascinating). Each new place visited was a highlight - we ventured into an old bomb shelter, which still had some food supplies and gas masks scattered around, and was meant to house 60 people (!). Next, we went to the Volta factory, seeing a room very akin to the pivotal sand room scene in Tarkovsky's film Stalker. We climbed on top of the building, with Kalamaja's rooftops and the towers of the Old Town laid out in front of us. The tour ended with an impromptu visit to a circus performance and a cup of tea and cake in the rooftop garden on top of Waypoint's office/bike shop in the Patarei Prison (don't worry, it's no longer an active prison and is now a cultural sight and venue in its own right). Long story short, if you want to experience Tallinn and its many-layered history, this tour is for you. The tour combines exploration of the wooden residential houses of Kalamaja, one of the trendiest and urban chic regions in town, with Tallinn's industrial legacy, discovering it, seeing it, reclaiming it. Jaak is knowledgeable, friendly and with a great sense of humour, just right for this sort of exploring. If you're adventurous, curious and crave to see more of Tallinn than the Old Town and wish to really feel the city, this is one for you. Thank you for an excellent experience - it takes something to impress a local and you did it with absolute ease. Aitäh! :)

Description

Following the historical harbours of Tallinn, we’ll leave behind the rush of the city without actually leaving, and go off exploring the solemn peninsula of Paljassaare. With secret trails cutting across this bird sanctuary and the occasional watchtower to climb, the view across the windy coastal meadows is breathtaking.

As you sit back and hang your feet off the cliff, with old artillery positions reminiscent of heroic wars behind your back, it’s the perfect moment to meditate on the blue sea.

A perfect little cycling expedition awaits.
