Mtskheta was the capital of the early Georgian Kingdom of Iberia from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD. Here Georgians accepted Christianity in 317 and Mtskheta remains the headquarters of the Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church.
This half-day tour allows you to visit Jvari Monastery which is a Georgian Orthodox monastery of the 6th century that is listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. This architectural masterpiece overlooks the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers – which is a spectacular sight due to the different colour of the water in each river. They are often known as the white and black rivers.
After exploring the site of Jvari Monastery, you’ll then visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral which is said to be the burial place of Christ’s Robe. This site dates back to the 4th century and features an elongated cross which appears to touch the sky. It was the main pilgrimage place on the Silk Road and the resting place of Georgian Kings.
