I'm staying at Rhiga Royal Hotel - but am looking for a smaller more authentic place for breakfast within walking distance. Any suggestions?

I recommend you to visit Chinzanso, rival hotel against Rhiga Royal Hotel, located across the street. It serves authentic place where foreign tourists would like to see and has nice restaurants, traditional garden and great view, especially in this season, we can see firefly nighttime. So even rich Tokyoite stay there.

But every services are expensive there. Breakfast shown as above website is over 3000 JPY. Still we can walk the garden for free.

By the way, this area has traditional buildings and garden, because feudal lord houses and gardens still remain.

Most authentic Japanese restaurants won't be near where you are staying; most of them will be in Ginza or Shinjuku downtown area.

Walking distance from the hotrl u are staying, i would recommend to go Uni.Shop & cafe 123 which opens early. or why not just try hotel breakfast which will offer both Japanese and Western at the same time :)

Thanks for those recommendations... very helpful. I did try the hotel breakfast which was fine but I like to eat in a smaller more local restaurant setting so am interested to see what else is in the area.
