The Struve's Geodetic Arc Monument lies in the shore of Haaparanda, at the end of the Strandpromenad. Between 1816 and 1855, Georg Wilhelm von Struve measured the shape of the globe by triangulation. The triangle chain extends over ten states from Ukraine to Norway. The Struve's Chain is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Why you should visit it
In Finland there lies 6 well preserved measurement points across the whole country. The point are mostly located at the hill tops, due the practicality to see upon to the next stop by horizon. In Sweden there is 4 measurement points, and in the Norway 4 measurement points. In total there are 34 point throughout the chain from Ukraine to Norway.
