First of all grab an espresso on the run standing at the bar with everyone else, the best way to kick start a new day! Coffee is definitely a social occasion and Turin is plenty of magnificent 19th century and cozy cafes. In the city center you can easily find cheap restaurants for a budget meal, often with special proposals for lunch, or little pizza take away, just to satisfy your need of a fast bite during the daytime.
Starting from 6.00 pm, following the Turinese tradition you can’t miss the Merenda sinoira with typical piedmontese food, or today’s evolution, Aperitivo or Aperi-cena, as we say, because definitely closer to a dinner than a pre-dinner snack, for the copious amount of food. It’s cheap and we don’t mind about going back to the buffet to fill our dish again if we are still hungry.
Don’t forget you’re in Italy, during meal time food will be a frequent conversation topic.
Piedmont is the premier wine region of Italy and birth place of the Slow food movement with Eataly as the greatest gourmet grocery in Europe, housed in an old Fiat factory, here you can find the best Italian food. Ask for Gianduiotti, Turin's contribution to the world of chocolate, and for Grissini at the bakery, both were created here and we all like it! Last but not least, if you’re thirsty look for the Turét, our green bull-head fountain dispensing free public water, we’re proud of them.
