Rather than staying in the centre, I’d prefer to stay in an area where locals actually live. Somewhere with local places to eat, markets, etc. Which part of town would you recommend?

Turku is a small town where everything is near. You can meet locals in the river banks when the weather is nice. In the summer old wood build quarters of Martti, Port Arthur, Raunistula and Nummi are nice places to wander around. You should take a boat trip to Ruissalo on Sunday. The market place is not in use in this year but the Indoor Market in Eerikinkatu is worth a visit, there you can eat lunch too. There are a lot of nice restaurants in the city center: Gustavo, Tiirikkala, Cup & Pint, Kerttu, Pippurimylly, Nerå, Tårget etc. you will not be hungry. Welcome!

Hi Maria. Turku is not too big, so most of the restaurants and the market place & market hall are right in the centre of Turku. The most cosy neighbourhoods (and not too far from centre) are Portsa (Port Arthur) and Martti.

Hi Maria!

Turku is not touristy at all even in the very centre, and many local people live right there in the most central areas of the city. All the popular restaurants, bars, cafes and sights are located in the central area of the city making it the best place to look for accommodation. The are nice neighborhoods such as Martti and Port Arthur a little further away from the centre but finding a place to stay can prove out to be problematic. Even if you'd end up staying close to the market square (which is the epicentre for pretty much everything going on in Turku) you will not be troubled by tourists, hagglers or touters. I'll happily provide more information should you need it!

Hi Maria! Many locals, including myself live right in the center. Even though the center is the more “touristy” area, it’s still also full of locals. The Aura River area is beautiful and is often referred to as “Turku’s living room,” a place where locals like to go and sit, have some drinks or a picnic and enjoy the river. Also in the center is Turku’s Market Hall, which is a great place to grab lunch and browse the different items. Turku is not a huge town, so most of the restaurants, shops and hotels are in the center.
