Vernis factory is an integral part of Tikkurila's riverfront history. In 1757, Dynnäs rustholli founded a watermill on the shores of the Keravanjoki River. In 1862 an oil press was established. In the same year, the Helsinki-Hämeenlinna railway and Tikkurila station passing by Vernissa were opened. Five years later, a vernis distillery was built.
The history of Tikkurila's Color Paint Factory began in the 1860s. In 1919 the Paint factory as enlarged with a new paint and lacquer factory. The vernis factory was closed down in the 1970s. The building was transferred to the City of Vantaa in 1979. In May 1985, the Vantaa youth occupied the building and demanded it for cultural purposes.
The activity was rewarded when the Cultural Center Vernissa started operating in the autumn of 1990. Industrial History.
