Hi all,

I am spending a few days in Vienna in autumn and we are planning our itinery. In terms of things we want to do that are a bit further away from our hotel, we have: the Schonburg Palace and zoo (sorry for spelling), the Prater amusement park and the island retreat in the middle of the river. We dont have time to do them all. We are most set on the zoo, but are the others worth tryinng to slot in?

Dear Katie,

I think you could do Prater! It's still quite central (5 minutes with the tube from the absolute center of Vienna), and it doesn't matter how long you want to stay because it's a "pay per ride" park.

Another idea would be not to go to the "Danube island" but to "Old Danube" (Alte Donau) and get a electric or sailing boat there for a few hours. Old Danube is not a river, but a large pond and has recreational activities all around, as well as restaurants.

Hi Katie! the zoo is really worth a visit I would say. It's really big - if you would want to see everything it would take like 4 hours I guess. The Schönbrunn Palace however is nice to see from the outside already. If you don't mind a little exercise, walk up to the Gloriette and enjoy the beautiful view over the Palace and Vienna.
I took a tour of the Palace last week (Grand Tour) and to be honest I was disappointed by the fact that all rooms were so crowded with visitors. It all felt quite rushed. Also, the Informationen provided was rather general on Austrian Monarchy, focused on Maria Theresia, Franz and Sisi. Don't ge me wrong, it is beautiful, but on a sunny das I would rather focus on outside sights and activities.
Prater and the Danube Island are both accessible by the line U1 and not far from the stops. You could get off, have a quick look, and if you don't like it go further to the next attraction. For the island you could rent a City Bike (https://citybikewien.at/en/) at very low cost to explore it.
Have a great time in Vienna!

I really like Prater, especially at night. It is open late and the lights and music make for a fun evening. The ferris wheel is a great experience with nice views over the city. Make sure to try a lángos while you are there!

You could visit Schönbrunn, the Zoo and Prater one day easily in my opinion.
