Description

The day begins with a bus ride from Vienna to Gmunden, where we’ll briefly stop to admire the quaint Ort Castle. Located on an isle in Lake Traunsee and surrounded by mountain ranges, it’s a sight to behold.

We’ll then continue our journey to Hallstatt, a UNESCO-listed lakeside village at the base of a majestic mountain. Wander though its narrow lanes and admire its charming wooden buildings while getting to know its 7000-year history.

You’ll learn about the Hallstatt Salt Mine (in the past, salt was the region’s primary commodity) and visit the ossuary, featuring hundreds of hand-painted skulls dating back to the 18th century.

Next, admire Hallstatt’s beauty from the lake on a 20-minute boat tour. You’ll then have some free time for lunch or more sightseeing.

Finally, we’ll meet at the Salzbergbahn, the funicular that will take us up to the Skywalk observation deck for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Perfect
I had the best day on this tour. The journey to get to Hallstatt is long but it's split up with one service station stop each way and on the way, you stop at the castle for a bit. Hallstatt is by far one of the most beautiful places I've seen and would deffo recommend this trip. Our guide was so lovely and informative. He was a credit to the company. It's pretty busy when we went in August but the guide says it's harder to get to Hallstatt in winter with the roads, and to be honest somewhere like that will always be busy. Unless you stay the night when tours leave. There's the chance to go up to the lookout by cable car and have a guided 30 or so minutes through the village, and then a further 20 mins in the church and skull place, but all this is optional if you just want to explore by yourself. And there's the boat trip at the end. Excellent day!
Hallstatt was a must for us, but being in Vienna, none of us wanted the hassle of renting and driving a car that far. Taking the tour bus was a great alternative. Driver was good and the guide was knowledgeable and accommodating.
