Why locals love it

Vilnius isn’t exactly a big city, although if you feel like escaping to somewhere quieter, the rich history of Trakai might tickle your fancy. It's nestled between several picturesque lakes and is home to the prettiest castle in Lithuania. It’s just 28 km from Vilnius and getting here by bus is easy.

Why you should visit it

Historically Trakai is a very important city. Although it's now home to just a couple of thousand citizens, it was once the capital of Lithuania.

Special tip

The Karaims who once lived here invented a dish called Kibinai. Locals always go to a restaurant to have this dish after a day of sightseeing.

Looks like a fairytale place. A great castle, the lakes around... Everything is good! Easy to go by bus from Vilnius.

Hi Deborah. I get a bus in the morning at Vilnius bus station to Trakai bus station. Then you have a short walk (about 15min) to reach the castle. I came to Vilnius again at afternoon. I did this some time ago, so I don't remember which was the bus or the timetable. Better you ask in the bus station which bus it is.
