We spend a weekend in Vilnius and booked the "Soviet Vilnius" private tour for 9 people. Our tour guide Martyna was absolutely fantastic! In 4 hours we covered everything from Communist remains over wooden hut district to Little Manhattan highrisers and back to Soviet era and Lithuanian independence. We learned about different eras in Lithuanian history, culture and even movies. This tour was the highlight of my trip and I can only highly recommend it to anyone visiting Vilnius.

Highlights

Find out how basketball led us to independence

Hear horrific tales of life and death during the occupation

Hear the brave stories of people trying to runaway to the West

See imposing Soviet-era architecture

Learn how the KGB spied on foreign guests

Description

On March 11, 1990, Lithuania became the first country to declare independence from the USSR after 50 years of Soviet occupation. Those years had a huge impact on the lives of ordinary people, Lithuania’s culture and its architecture.

The road to independence was not easy, but Lithuanians never gave up. They started one of the longest guerrilla wars in Europe in the 20th century and finished it with the Singing Revolution and the Baltic human chain.

The occupation, however, was not all bad news. It gave us new buildings, a new style of architecture, and lots of funny and crazy stories that should never be forgotten.

During this tour you’ll visit the main Soviet heritage sites and see places that most foreigners miss! You’ll find out how basketball led us to independence, how the KGB spied on foreign guests and in which hotel all foreigners had to stay, where to find the best hot chocolate in the city, why unemployment didn’t exist during Soviet times and much more!

There’s a lot of walking involved so please wear comfortable shoes and dress according to the weather conditions.

Great tour and informative guide who showed us the recent history of Vilnius. We had a group of 8 so had the luxury of a private tour which was nice. We took the Soviet Union tour and were led off the tourist path which was very interesting. Tour comes recommended and Martyna was very sweet.
My friends and I booked the Soviet tour in Vilnius which was really interesting. We left the Old Town and explored the other side of the city which has lots of interesting stories too. Our guide Martina (sorry if it's wrong :) was the best. She was not only knowledgeable but interesting and fun to listen. I would definitely recommend everyone to join this tour. Just be sure to book it in advance.
