How to turn back time

Why locals love it

Photoplastikon is not a time machine, but a device from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, showing you three dimensional pictures of old Warsaw. The machine itself is the only remaining photoplastikon in Poland, and one of the very few in the world, still in good working condition.

Why you should visit it

If you would like to see how Warsaw looked like in the good old times, before the Second Word War, you should head to Fotoplastikon. During the screenings you can listen to jazz music and feel melancholic about the city’s sad past. Check the website for special screenings. Admission is free on Thursday.

Special tip

Walking at Aleja Jerozolimskie look for the stereoscopes in the wall. The entrance of Fotoplastikon is through that courtyard, don't be shy to go in!

Eh, I’d skip it. We wondered in, thinking it was free on Sundays (as stated above). We had looked at half of the small exhibit when a woman sternly told us “today... today is pay day”.She showed us a sign that says Thursday is the free day- and this is certainly not worth paying money for-I think a drink at the Mariott overlooking the city and walking in the park or a museum would be time better spent.

Hi Jennipher. I am sorry to hear you did not enjoy the experience as much as the previous travellers who commented below. As for the free day, I have updated the description. I don't believe that the less than 1 EUR entry fee is expensive if you are genuinely interested in the exhibits. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Warsaw.

Thanks for the reply, Ildiko. The entry free is not expenisve at all, there was just no one there to inform us of the change on free admission days and we had seen half of the exhibit, which was fine, nothing spectacular. I was thrilled to see most museums/exhibits offered free days and we would spend over an hour in each of those places. Warsaw is bursting w/culture and I wanted to spend my time accordingly to not miss much of it.

A very unique place which you will not find anywhere else. Going there is like a trip in time to the times when there was no tv, no cinemas yet. A very unique and interesting place.
