Poland was a communist country for nearly 50 years, and was the first country to break out from behind the Iron Curtain and become a democratic state. Warsaw, its capital, became the centre of the new socialist reality, witnessing all of the terror and absurdities of the system.
Painting the grass green for official visits, standing in long queues for meat and toilet paper, being surrounded by the propaganda of success; this was all part of everyday life.
We want to show you sites that will help you understand why Poles both love and hate the Palace of Culture and Science, what they think of 1945 liberation, and why they’re proud of what happened in 1989.
Helmets and baskets are available on request.
