"In this temple..."
Lincoln Memorial5
Why locals love it
With 36 large hellenistic columns, its no wonder it feels like entering an etherial space when walking up to the Lincoln Memorial. Located due west of the Reflecting Pool, facing the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial is one of the most well known landmarks in America. The interior area holds the statue itself, 60 feet tall.

Why you should visit it
"In this temple, as in the hearts of the people, for whom he saved the union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever", bears the inscription behind Honest Abe. And it is true, this memorial has become a kind of sacred space, especial with regard to civil rights. It is especially notable as the backdrop to MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech.
Special tip
If you can't make the trek out, you can find the memorial on the back of the $5 and the US penny...
