Why locals love it

Slavín was constructed between 1957 and 1960 as a monument to fallen Soviet Army soldiers during World War II who liberated Bratislava from German fascists. On its walls you can see Slovak cities with dates of their liberation.

Why you should visit it

In order to get to Slavín you have to go through a quarter full of nice houses and embassies, so a stroll up the hill is really worth it. The monument is located near the city center and boasts a wonderful view over Bratislava.

Locals don't love this monument. They are either indifferent or dislike it. It was built by a tyranical regime to appease the Soviet overlords. For years, it stood as a constant reminder of their power. Yes, it's big and majestic as many other building built in the style of socialist realism, but it's also necessary to understand the whole context of it.

A beautiful view of Bratislava in its entirety. The quaint old town on the left, Communist-era architecture on the right. And the memorial itself is an interesting paradox. It immortalizes Bratislava's Communist past but also has the best view of the city. Such a great place!
