Why locals love it

With its high ceilings, effortlessly cool style and laid-back staff, Csendes is one of my favourite places to meet friends and hang out in. It is a perfect place for a cup of coffee during the day or for a glass of wine or pálinka before (or instead of) visiting one of Budapest’s more lively venues.

Why you should visit it

As its name (meaning ’quiet’) suggests, Csendes is a more relaxed, café-like version of Budapest’s famous ruinpubs.
While you still have the chance to sit in half a bathtub, you’ll definitely meet less tourists and are more likely to hear what your friends are saying than in the more party-oriented alternatives such as Szimpla or Instant.

Special tip

Take a look at the grafitti left by the guests; while most is inevitably concerned with the anatomy of the female body, some verge on modern art.

Lovely terrace dining right by Karoly Gardens in the summer.

The address shown on google maps is wrong. Its further down street. Turn left opposite park. Its on the right as you look down the small lane.

Csendes, Ferenczy István Street, July 30, 2015. afternoon (between 4 and 5). Nightmare. Young waiter, obvioulsy does not feel like working there. I see goose crackles on the menu, but since there had never been the kind of beer I wanted (although it was on the menu) I asked if they really had it. "We have everything, that's why it is on the menu" says the guy somewhat aggressively (what's up with the attitude?). OK, I say, only asked because they don't always have the beers on the menu. He grumbles sth, we sit down, I ask for two Soproni Demon, which is not only on the menu, but also written on the wall. Oh, that they don't have, because it goes wrong fast in summer (???) - well, they never had it in winter (maybe then it froze), spring or autumn either, whenever I looked for it. l ask for the crackles, in a few mi nutes he returns that the menu changed 2 weeks ago and they have not changed the printed version yet, so they don't have it.) Oops. why did I ask? Attitude!!! We ordered sth else, ate and I want to pay with a 20000 bill, I know it is difficult, but that's what I have. But he says he doesn't have that much money in the cashier! (What???) Counting unhappily, I say we can pay with a card. There is no paying with cards, not now, not ever, there won't be. OK, I say, although he too would be better off. He says he might ask me to go and change the bill, but that is almost impossible if I don't buy sth and if even the restaurant cannot, where we ate and drank and it id his job anyway. He says well, he will give me back thousand forint bills, I want to be nice and say I will be very happy, to which he answers that he doesn't care who is happy about what. Thanks. I used to like this place, although they could have dark beer (or take it off the menu), but this fellow doesn't belong there and if he so hates to be a waiter, do sth else, but at least don't take it out on customers, and hold back the attitude. I won't go back because of him for a long time (if ever).
