A ruincafé
Csendes16
Why locals love it
With its high ceilings, effortlessly cool style and laid-back staff, Csendes is one of my favourite places to meet friends and hang out in. It is a perfect place for a cup of coffee during the day or for a glass of wine or pálinka before (or instead of) visiting one of Budapest’s more lively venues.

Why you should visit it
As its name (meaning ’quiet’) suggests, Csendes is a more relaxed, café-like version of Budapest’s famous ruinpubs.
While you still have the chance to sit in half a bathtub, you’ll definitely meet less tourists and are more likely to hear what your friends are saying than in the more party-oriented alternatives such as Szimpla or Instant.
Special tip
Take a look at the grafitti left by the guests; while most is inevitably concerned with the anatomy of the female body, some verge on modern art.
