Why locals love it

In the mountainous hinterland of Chania, Stelios Trilirakis, the chef-patron of Dounias, grows his own organic food and cooks it in wood ovens, wood stoves and roasters.
Stelios serves either vegetarian or non-vegetarian dishes, slow cooked and literally melting on your tongue.

Why you should visit it

The food is simple but deliciously full of flavour and the service is very warm and welcoming.
Even if you are a meat -eater try the vegetarian dishes and you will not miss the meat one bit.
Expect to have a different dining experience.

Special tip

Be hungry, don't hurry, trust the cook, enjoy the natural environment.

Far south, underneath the White Mountains, lies a wonderful tavern. You can taste pure organic ingredients and food prepared in a traditional way. Great.

It's a long haul from the city. Traditional Cretan cooking, all in handmade clay pots cooked on open fire. Not much of an environment but the food is outstanding. One of my favorite out of the way restaurants.
