Samaria Gorge is one of the world's Biosphere Reserves of unique natural beauty separating the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and Mt Volakias. It is a 16 km long hike, starting at an altitude of 1,250 m at the northern entrance, and ending at the shores of the Libyan Sea in Agia Roumeli. Open from May 1st till October 15th.
The gorge became a national park in 1962, mainly as a refuge for the rare kri-kri (Cretan wildgoat) that can be found only in Crete. You can reach it by taking the bus to Omalos from Chania Central Bus Station (KTEL return ticket price 14,30€). When you reach Agia Roumeli beach you take the boat (11€) to Sfakia in order to take the return bus.
You should be equipped with hiking boots or at least a sturdy pair of sneakers. The walk takes 5-7h and you can find lots of drinking water there.
