Tarvantovaara's Wilderness Area is located to the west of Leppäjärvi village and to the north of Kaaresuvanto village. In the north, the area is bordered by the border between Finland and Norway. To the south of the wilderness lies the northern border of the pine forest and near the Norwegian border a mountain plateau with the highest tops.
The highest peaks are over 600 meters above sea level. The forests of the area are mainly fells. About one-third of the Tarvantovaara's WIlderness Area is a marsh that is rich in peat, or ice-containing peat bogs.
